Pop-up
Globe is the name allocated to a combination of the world’s first
full-scale working replica of Shakespeare’s theatre - the second Globe,
and The Pop-up Globe Theatre Company - which produces and performs
popular and critically acclaimed productions of Shakespeare’s most
popular masterworks.
It popped up for the first time in February 2016 at Auckland’s Greys
Avenue. It presented the largest festival of Shakespeare ever held in
the Southern Hemisphere.
That event was anchored by the Pop-up Globe Theatre Company’s
productions of Shakespeare’s famed tragedy Romeo & Juliet and the
comedy Twelfth Night. The season was an unexpected hit of the Auckland
summer, welcoming 100,000 attendees and was extended twice to meet
extraordinary demand.
Between 2016 and 2019 Pop-up Globe hosted more than 600,000 audience
members. It popped up in Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, and
earned critical and popular acclaim wherever it went including being
described as ‘The best night of theatre ever’ by Australian Stage.
The Pop-up Globe brand
In 2019 the Pop-up Globe Theatre Company toured to theatres around New Zealand. The audience’s experience at a Pop-up Globe show was very different from most nights at the theatre. The house lights stayed on throughout the performance, and the action spilled off the stage and into the audience.
The fast-paced performances included singing, dancing, fights, love, lust, and rivers of blood. Stuff reviewed the performances in Christchurch as ‘epic’.
Now it returns. Opening in February 2023, Pop-up Globe will present two of Shakespeare’s most popular masterworks – the tragedy Romeo & Juliet, and the comedy Twelfth Night – both of which will be held at SkyCity Theatre.
Marketing the Event
The
core target market is previous ticket buyers for Pop-up Globe
performances. Many of Pop-up Globe’s fans attended multiple shows and
seasons, and none have been able to experience a Pop-up Globe show for
three years.
Fortuitously Pop-up Globe’s ticketing partner Eventfinda,
has the email addresses, purchasing history, and their permission to
contact previous ticket buyers across five seasons in New Zealand. This
will be the primary marketing channel for the season.
In addition, SkyCity Theatre is generously contributing marketing assets
including promotion across its databases and onsite at Sky City
Auckland to support sales of the tickets for the season.
An opportunity to participate.
To
assist in the production of the Event, a new Limited Partnership, named
Cesario Auckland Limited & Co formed to produce and promote the
event and raise the money necessary to do so. This structure provides
limited liability to investors while any profits or losses are allocated
to the participant directly.
The Offer is to raise $550,000 which will be allocated to the costs of
rehearsal and marketing for the season. The budgeted profit over the
proposed season is $441,000. Investors are allocated 45% of the profit
so their expected return is $200,000 which is a 36% return on their
investment. The season breaks even at 55% of tickets sold.
In the event of any losses the Limited Partnership structure allows a
share of those losses to be allocated to the investors which could be
offset against their other source income for that year.
